Tara-Iti / New Zealand Fairy Tern

Created in collaboration with the Auckland Zoo Store, $50 from every retail purchase (via Luke Jacomb Studio) of the Tara-Iti will go to the Auckland Zoo Conservation Fund to support the ongoing effort to protect native birds.

The Tara-Iti is Aotearoa’s rarest native breeding bird. A small and elegant sea with bird approximately 50 individuals remaining in the wild, this critically endangered coastal bird is mainly found on the northern coastlines of the North Island. Shallow ocean feeders laying only 1-2 eggs per nest in unlined sand depressions, the species is at high risk from dogs, cats, foot traffic and commercial fishing operations.
